Caroline Chisholm lived a life serving others. She was dedicated to helping the European settlers on arrival in Australia. She particularly helped unaccompanied women and families whom she helped to find work and somewhere safe to live. Her tireless philanthropic work played an important role in the development of colonial Australia. In this resource, Caroline Chisholm visits Miss Townsend’s class to share her story.

Miss Townsend isn’t your average teacher. She ensures her students are totally engaged in her lessons by transporting famous Australians to her classroom for the students to interview and learn from. Caroline Chisholm is one of these special visitors and your students will be as engaged as Miss Townsend’s class by her story.

This lesson and its activities have been created to help you meet the Australian Curriculum achievement standard outcome for Year 5 requiring that students “The nature of convict or colonial presence, including the factors that influenced patterns of development, aspects of the daily life of the inhabitants (including Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples)”(ACARA 2017) Content descriptor ACHASSK107 requires that students investigate colonial life to discover what it was like for inhabitants including the lives of children and small communities. Caroline’s story is a great way for students to explore and discuss this topic.
